Plex Remote Access or Playback Not Working? Fix 403 on Synology

Plex remote access or playback not working, or original file requests returning 403? This guide separates connection failures from rejected playback requests and introduces Plex Local Bridge, HamHub’s open-source Synology package.

Why does Plex remote access or playback fail?

If the public address cannot connect at all, check Plex remote access settings, router port forwarding and the NAS firewall first. Plex Local Bridge requires public requests to already reach the NAS.

If the server connects but playback or original file requests return 403, Plex’s identification of the request source may be involved. Also check account permissions and connection settings; a 403 alone does not identify the cause.

How can Plex Local Bridge help on Synology?

Plex Local Bridge is a local proxy package open-sourced by HamHub for the native Plex Media Server package on DSM 7.2.2+. It forwards public playback requests to Plex on the NAS to address remote playback failures, 403 errors and original file access failures caused by request source identification.

With port takeover enabled, you can keep your existing public address, client and router port forwarding. The proxy preserves Plex account authentication and streaming, without transcoding or caching media.

How do I install and use it?

  1. Download the SPK for your NAS from Assets on GitHub Releases: choose the file ending in x86_64.spk for Intel / AMD 64-bit NAS, or armv8.spk for ARM 64-bit NAS. Install the SPK directly in DSM Package Center. No extraction or GitHub sign-in is required.
  2. Start the package and open its WebUI. Check the entry and proxy ports: 32400 and 13240 by default, both configurable.
  3. For public IPv4 only, disable IPv6 entry takeover (the checkbox labeled “同时接管 IPv6 入口”).
  4. Save and apply (“保存并应用”), enable or update takeover (“启用 / 更新接管”), then confirm your administrator password in the native DSM dialog.
  5. Once takeover is active (“接管中”), retry playback in HamHub using your original public address.

If the DSM firewall is enabled, allow the proxy listening port with the same source scope as the original Plex port. See the project README for configuration and diagnostics.

Which setups need separate checks?

The package is experimental and primarily targets native Synology Plex installations. HTTPS passthrough cannot rewrite source information inside encrypted requests. Docker, Plex Relay and other reverse proxy paths need separate validation. Results depend on the Plex version and connection path.
